One of the most rewarding forms of exercise for weight loss is running. The endurance, both physically and mentally, can change a person from the inside out. So, if you want to try running for weight loss, how do you start?
First, you need a plan. Any beginners training program should be sufficient, but make sure it starts with some time walking as well as running. While it's tempting to start off with a bang, a little caution will help you prevent injuries.
After a plan is selected, you must have the proper equipment. Thankfully, running doesn't require a whole lot of extra equipment. A good pair of shoes and some loose fitting clothing will get you on your way. Also, try finding a water bottle that you can easily carry to stay hydrated.
Most runners make the mistake of starting off too fast. If you try to keep a fast pace, you probably won't be able to run very far in the beginning. Try running slower than you think you are capable of. Your main goal when starting out is to increase your endurance. The longer you can maintain a slow, steady jog, the farther you will be able to go.
After you've built up a nice running base, you can start to work on your speed. A popular way to do this is to run hills. Hills can be tough and make you want to quit, but the payoff is huge. Add in hill workouts at least once per week to see a big change in your pace.
Running for weight loss can be accomplished by watching what you eat after you run. You may feel like you could eat a horse after a running session, but overeating won't help you create a calorie deficit for weight loss.
